My take on this story is that it's less about archiving and more about access to data and tools, perhaps even a fusing of data and tools.

Technology is always taking science on new journeys, the telescope, microscope, electron-microscope, aircraft, satellites, computers.... each has opened up new areas of investigation. From the resulting discoveries new technologies emerge.

How will Google change science? My prediction is that they will create opportunities for open collaborations that span many disciplines, many countries, and many languages.
