My Old School
I went back to my old school last week, and of course I went to the library. This is where I decided to become a librarian.
I found one of the librarians who was there when I was a student, and we chatted about the state of the profession, ALA, other Bard students who went on to become librarians, and the exciting things they’re doing with their archives.
The library looked great—full of students, even on a beautiful Friday afternoon. My old dorm was another story.

Hi Tara,
I’m a Bard alum and a librarian as well. Glad you had a good trip to campus. It’s always fun to see how it’s changed, and how it hasn’t.

Hey Tara:
I was up at Bard this past weekend with my wife and daughter. Got a really nice tour of the place. While I was wandering around, I couldn’t get “My Old School” out of my head, but I didn’t even know about the connection to Bard until after I brought it up to the student who was giving the tour. Freaky. The girl giving the tour had come from Southern California (which apparently hasn’t tumbled into the sea since I left it) and was named for a Steely Dan song. The place was starting to get weird on me. Weirder yet, we were led to the dusty archive where the senior theses are kept. The guide asked if anyone wanted to look one up. I was tempted to pry (but I only know your married name). One parent who had graduated from Bard tried to find his, but as luck would have it, it was misshelved.
Bard seems like a nice place. I’m still trying to figure out what my daughter thought of it.

Another Bard alum and a librarian, too. I left before the latest addition was finished, and I’m not sure it made me want to become a librarian. I do remember writing my senior project, and leaving my carrel often to go the lower level, not just to read old Senior projects, but to also preuse all the 19th french lit books that were just lying around, as well as decades worth of fashion magazines. I hope things are a bit better taken care of now that there’s more room.

I don’t know what it was like before the addition, but I think things are pretty well taken care of. They are running out of room again, though.
